Interview with Brandon O’Rourke at KTVB about his new book Treasure Inside: 23 Unexpected Principles that Activate Greatness
Q: Ron, why this book, at this time?
Ron: Because the real economy doesn’t live on Wall Street, or even Main Street, for that matter. It is inside each of us. Chris Peterson, football coach for Boise State University, is famous for saying ‘potential will get you fired’ because he knows that his performance is judged based on a simple metric: wins and losses. However, he still has to start with potential. Treasure Inside is about understanding your potential better so it will lead to greater performance.
Q: '23 Unexpected Principles…' - give us an example of what you mean.
Ron: Let’s start with Principle 1, Diamonds. Based on a famous speech in American history, we learn that some of our greatest possibilities are staring us in the face, but often they are invisible. It may be an opportunity we are under-appreciating, or it might be a big problem we are facing. One of my mentors told me, ‘every problem or adversity has contained within it a seed of equivalent or greater benefit.’
Q: Why do you call these principles “unexpected”?
Ron: Mostly because these principles are based on human capacities innate in each of us, yet seldom fully developed. Another example is Principle 6, Choices. This principle is about understanding the difference between what we can control and what we can’t. There are things that happen to all of us beyond our control. However, in every situation, we have much more control over how we ‘choose’ to respond than we realize.
Q: Who will benefit from Treasure Inside?
Ron: Anyone who wants to grow, who knows they haven’t exhausted their potential. This is an aggregation of the most important things I have learned throughout my career as an advisor and coach about increasing personal performance. So, it starts with potential, but it ends with performance.
Q: How can folks get a copy of your book?
Ron: It is available at Amazon.com, on Kindle, Barnes & Noble, or you can order it from any local bookstore. You can also visit www.TreasureInsideBook.com. We will be adding resources and action steps for developing each of the principles in the book to the website. Currently you can download a self-assessment for the 23 principles covered in the book.
