We often ask our clients the following questions: What one thing, if you did it extremely well, would make the greatest difference in creating a successful future for your business? So why aren't you doing it now? What are the obstacles?
Several years ago I read Marcus Buckingham’s book, The One Thing You Need to Know. He writes about great managing, great leading and sustained individual success. He supposed - and I’ve seen it in live action - that in each of these three areas, there are different key disciplines:
To Be a Great Manager:
- Organize around strengths
- Focus on people’s strengths and take advantage of these strengths
- Average managers spend too much time trying to fix the weaknesses
To Be a Great Leader:
- Be clear (this is more important than being right)
- Be clear about why the organization exists, who your customers are and what you are trying to accomplish
- Be consistent
For Sustained Individual Performance:
- Learn to say “no”
- We can only be truly great in one or two things
- To sustain individual success over time, you need to figure out what those one or two things are and then say “no” to everything else
What is YOUR one thing?
